Quotes

#1: “Baba hired the same nursing woman who had fed me to nurse Hassan.”(Pg 11) This statement symbolizes how close the boys are, and it reveals the irony within the story of how different their life styles and living situations were. It also shows how much Baba cared for the boy from birth as if he was his own son making sure he was nurtured. This foreshadows Amir’s jealously toward his close friend and perhaps his jealousy getting the best of him. It makes me view them as basically brothers because that is a bond that they have that no one can break. Only siblings are able to share that bond.

#2: I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out.” (Pg 1) This quote stands out because it makes the reader think there is a mystery to the writer; a hidden past he is tired of hiding. It foreshadows him exposing a terrible secret that he must confess in order to set it free. It will most likely be the ugly truth since it has been buried for a good twenty-six years. This adds a general mysterious feel to the book making the readers want to read more because of their curiosity. I think that one cannot move on with their present if the past is not staying where it should, in the past and it must be dealt with. I think it speaks volumes on the strength the author has to tell this story and confront his own issues.

#3: “I can never tell Baba from the bear.” (Pg 12) This quote reveals how beastly Amir views his father. He thinks he is a majestic creature, but however it is dangerous to get close to. It adds to the development of Baba’s character, because he is so highly respected in the world he is as powerful as a grizzly. It sticks out because it is his own son’s view of him and it is not a lovable image. From a distance it is great to admire but up close it will tear him to shreds, which his father does with his lack of attention or approval. It foreshadows a possible altercation with his beastly father and Amir not standing a chance at winning it. This is important for the development of Baba’s character and how he is perceived in the eyes of his son and the readers.

  1. I love your first quote! I didn’t make that connection to the love Baba showed Amir early on.i also like the connection you made to them being like brothers. Although i do believe Amir made his jealousy known in later section I’m not sure how you made that connection from this particular quote. Even so, you have an awesome sense of foreshadowing!

  2. I completely agree with what you wrote about the third quote and Amir viewing his father as more of a threat than a comfort. It almost makes me wonder if Amir and his father’s dysfunctional family dynamic will be something that will end up strengthening or weakening their relationship in the long run. I connect the way Amir sees his father as a bear to the way Amir sometimes views Hassan as more of a burden than a blessing. On one hand, he is glad to have Hassan in his life, but on the other hand, he is embarrassed by him and only wishes to be seen with him when no one of high status is around to see them together. I feel like Amir’s father almost views him in the same way.
